Fishery Electrofishing Services

As part of our wide variety of fishery management services we offer and electrofishing service for fisheries in the UK.

What is Electrofishing?

Electrofishing is a safe, commonly used technique used by trained professionals for surveying fish within a fishery. When carried out safely and within the correct guidelines, it stuns fish momentarily allowing them to be caught examined and then returned to the fishery without harm.

The device used for this process is called an electro fisher and uses two electrodes, an anode and a cathode, to deliver a charge into the water. When the electro fisher is triggered any fish within a close distance of it will undergo a muscular spasm, which causes them to swim towards the anode ring. This is known as galvanotaxis. Thorough historic testing with AC and DC currents it has now been determined that smooth DC current is the safest with pulsed DC only required normally within colder months when additional time is required to retrieve fish under the influence of this method.

Why Would Your fishery benefit from our electro fishing services?

Using Heathland Aquatic Engineering’s Electrofishing services for your fishery, enables you to keep records of the population of fish in your lake, including numbers, species and the overall health of the fish. This will help you to better manage your fishery or for us to do it for you if you prefer. This method can also be used to remove unwanted stocks which may be sold to other fisheries.
