FAQs on canal management and services
We have been supporting the wonderful canals and waterways across England and the rest of the UK for a number of years. We are on good terms with key clients such as the Environmental Agency and Wildlife Trusts. Most of our clients know exactly what to expect and they generally know all their requirements, so for private clients we have compiled a list of common questions and answers to aid your understanding of how we might support you with problems along your local stretch of canal.
Are you able to offer your canal services throughout the UK including Scotland and Wales?
Although we are based in Norfolk, we have completed canal bank erosion and canal maintenance contracts across the UK and in Scotland and Wales. We can also consider such contracts across Europe and even in other parts of the world.
Do you only work on large and commercial canal contracts?
No, our services are open to anyone in the UK, private or commercial. However on some projects, the Environmental Agency may need to give relevant permissions.
Do you dredge canals?
Yes, dredging canals and removing silt is one of our key areas of work when it comes to canal maintenance. Canals, like rivers do get silt build-up and congested with debris.
What materials do you use for erosion repairs and canal maintenance?
We use a wide range of materials to help prevent erosion and repair damage to eroded banks on canal systems. Plastic and steel piling, Nicospan, brushwood faggots, gabions, rockrolls, coir matting and concrete revetment materials are just some of the products available and there is a good choice of environmentally pleasing and more industrial solutions to help with erosion issues.
What canal maintenance services does Heathland Aquatic Engineering offer?
We probably get the most enquiries for herbicide and mechanical weed control. We carry out this work with our weed boat and other equipment throughout the UK and we are always busy during the warmer months dealing with choked canals.
We also provide dredging services for canals and again work throughout the UK using a combination of long reach excavators and floating pontoon dredgers for this type of work but we also have our own hydraulic pumping dredge.
We can also assist with erosion maintenance and repair for canals throughout the UK and Europe. We use a variety of engineering methods for erosion repair and maintenance and offer both hard industrial solutions and more environmentally friendly methods.
Do you offer a fish survey service for canals?
Yes, we have aquaculture services within the business that can handle fish surveys for canals but we only provide these services within Norfolk, Suffolk, London, Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire due to cost implications.
Do you have your own staff or do you use subcontractors?
All of our staff are full-time employees and they are fully qualified and highly experienced in their key rolls within Heathland Aquatic Engineering.
Can you offer support and advice on flood defence for canals?
Yes we can, flood defence is a service we deal with regularly and our engineering consultants can offer advice on flood defence solutions along with design assistance and implement the works. Heathland Aquatic Engineering offer all these services, saving clients from having to deal with multiple contractors.
